Whether you have an open Center Cockpit, Express Cruiser, or Motor Yacht, we all get into uncomfortable Seas. Sometimes it is fun for us, but those onboard can sure put up objections in the smallest of choppy seas. Like all things, there is a balance…that fine line that works for everyone. There are times we wonder why we left the dock when we hit those predicted seas that we heard on the VHF radio weather channel. I guess it is the lure of the Harbor or Island that we want to get to. It could be a days’ trip or just a few hours away.
The Powerboats today accommodate, or should I say swallow you up in Amenities! Such as Wet Bars, Icemakers, Stereos w/remotes, built-in Swim platforms…and many other creature comforts. No wonder we want to head to our favorite Harbors and Islands…just to get away.
I find Provisioning a little bit of a hassle, but once it is done, I feel we’re ready to go. At least once a month I check the Battery connections for tightness, I open the Hatches for a look around the Engines for any tell tale signs of leaky hoses, stains that were not there before, loose belts, (can tell from the excess black dust)…and of course smell the area for fuel. At this point, I’m ready to go, but as usual, we’re waiting on our guests. I really don’t mind, it gives me time to sit behind the Helm and look around, relax, and get into the Cruising life I like so much. Leaning back, I switch on the VHF radio for an up-date on the weather.
I find the earlier I leave, 5 to 6am, the waters are like glass…sometimes hardly a ripple. It could be that the night time air and temperature being so stable…no winds, so everything settles down. As the days’ Sun rises, so does the Temperature which warms the land quickly and causes winds to blow on-shore. Where there is wind, there is waves. So leaving in the early morning hours makes for a generally smooth run with less complaints….Perfect for the Skipper!
As the Guests arrive we make them comfortable and let them know about some do’s and don’ts aboard…with that aside and last minute stowing being done, I switch on the “Bilge Blower” for ten minutes or so and get the coffee brewing!
Destination Block Island, RI….The Great Salt Pond on the west side of the Island. There is plenty of room for Anchoring or you can dock up at the Marinas on the south side of the Harbor. Getting there from Connecticut, Rhode Island, or Long Island, NY, you have to enter Block Island Sound, which with a south wind can send in those rollers. Also, Block Island is usually shrouded in Fog, so a lot of times you have to get close to see the Island come into view. A Radar/Chart plotter comes in pretty handy in these conditions. Once the “R-2″ bell Buoy is located it is a straight run in into the Harbor. They frequently call Block Island, the “Bermuda of the North”….and as you come into Great Salt Pond that vacation feeling comes over you…seeing the water sports area to the northwest side.. Marinas further up to the right and all the Anchoring to the left…You can also pick-up a Town Mooring right off the Marinas. There are plenty of Dinghy docks, or you can just call for “Tender” service…they come to you! Now sit back and relax, or head ashore to Town. Mopeds to rent…or try a bicycle!…Enjoy!
